The Publisher $12.99 Acclaimed historian Alan Brinkley gives us a sharply realized portrait of Henry Luce, arguably the most important publisher of the twentieth century. As the founder of Time, Fortune, and Life magazines, Luce changed the way we consume news and the way we understand our world. Born the son of missionaries, Henry Luce spent his childhood in rural China, yet he glimpsed a milieu of power altogether different at Hotchkiss and later at Yale. While working at a Baltimore newspaper, he and Brit Hadden conceived the idea of Time: a “news-magazine” that would condense the week’s events in a format accessible to increasingly busy members of the middle class. They launched it in 1923, and young Luce quickly became a publishing titan. In 1936, after Time’s unexpected success-and Hadden’s early death-Luce published the first issue of Life, to which millions soon subscribed. Brinkley shows how Luce reinvented the magazine industry in just a decade. The appeal of Life seemingly cut across the lines of race, class, and gender. Luce himself wielded influence hitherto unknown among journalists. By the early 1940s, he had come to see his magazines as vehicles to advocate for America’s involvement in the escalating international crisis, in the process popularizing the phrase “World War II.” In spite of Luce’s great success, happiness eluded him. His second marriage-to the glamorous playwright, politician, and diplomat Clare Boothe-was a shambles. Luce spent his later years in isolation, consumed at times with conspiracy theories and peculiar vendettas. The Publisher tells a great American story of spectacular achievement-yet it never loses sight of the public and private costs at which that achievement came. |

Software Publisher $86.03 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A software publisher is a publishing company in the software industry between the developer and the distributor. In some companies, two or all three of these roles may be combined. Software publishers often license software from original authordevelopers with specific limitations, such as a time limit or geographical region for a royalty consideration. The terms of licensing vary enormously, and are typically secret. The authordevelopers may use publishers to reach larger or foreign markets. Typically, the publisher will bear most of the cost of entering these markets. In return they pay the developer an agreed upon royalty payment. This Business of Publishing $8.59 THIS BUSINESS OF PUBLISHING has been hailed by literary agent Michael Larsen as "must reading for writers agents and anyone else who cares about the future of publishing." It reveals the unique perspective of Richard Curtis former president of the Association of Authors' Representatives. He provides the aspiring author with the benefit of over thirty years of lessons learned in the publishing industry including: the damage caused to the publishing industry by the archaic practice of selling books on consignment; the changing nature of the wholesale business and how it affects authors editors and agents; the way that large corporate mergers of publishing companies have brought about the disenfranchisement of authors and editors; the electronic media revolution and the opportunities it offers as well as the pitfalls. Curtis talks about the "blockbuster mentality" that currently dominates publisher thinking leading to increased dependence on a few overpaid authors with big-name market status. This is an engaging and thoroughly readable guidebook to one of the most rapidly changing industries in America. It is an essential reference work for anyone hoping to understand or function in the publishing world. |

Excerpt: The Hellier Stradivarius of circa 1679 is a violin made by Antonio Stradivari of Cremona , Italy . It derives its name from the Hellier family , who might well have bought it directly from the luthier himself. The Hellier Stradivarius has had a convoluted ownership history. It seems to have been in the possession of the Hellier family from the beginning of the 1700s. Sir Samuel Hellier, High Sheriff of Staffordshire 1745-1749, brought the violin to England, and through various wills it was kept in the family until 1880, about 180 years. In 1880, The Hellier was sold by Colonel Shaw-Hellier, commandant of the Royal Military School of Music , to George Crompton of Manchester, who, in 1885, sold it to the Hill firm on behalf of Dr. Charles Oldham of Brighton , a medical man with violin-playing talent. Shaw-Hellier repurchased the violin in 1890. Upon his death in 1910, his nephew sold the violin back to the Hill firm, who in turn sold it to Oscar Bondy of Vienna . Bondy kept it until 1925, when he sold it to the Hills for £5,000. Hill then sold it to H. E. Morris of Newmarket, formerly editor of the Shanghai Daily News ; upon his death in 1944, it was sold to Rembert Wurlitzer, the famous New York violin dealer, yet again through the Hill firm.In 1956, Wurlitzer sold the violin to Henry Hottinger of New York, who then sold it to Wurlitzer’s daughter in 1965. She kept it until 1979, when it was sold to Thomas M. Roberts of Memphis, through another dealer, Alfredo Halegua of the Washington, D.C. Violin Gallery. In 1998 Roberts sold the violin through Halegua to Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod , the ichthyologist and publishing entrepreneur later jailed for tax fraud .A. Philips Hill has called this violin “one of the finest Stradivaris in existence”; it is currently held by the |

Excerpt: Swedenborg’s Flying Machine was first sketched by the Swedish scientist Emanuel Swedenborg in 1714, when he was 26 years old. It was later published in his periodical in 1716. It is recognized as the first published description of a flying machine. Background In 1710, Swedenborg travelled from Sweden to London to complete his studies. Here he saw many cutting edge intellectual discoveries, which inspired him to try and invent gadgets of his own—for instance, a submarine and a flying machine. We know about this because he wrote about it in a letter home. The sketch from his notebook was found in 1868 in Linköping , by a visiting researcher from USA . The notebook is from 1714. It is referred to as “The Manuscript” as opposed to the published description, which is called “The Published Account”.The published account When Swedenborg returned to Sweden in 1714, he met with inventor Christopher Polhem and together with him published the periodical Daedalus Hyperboreus . When Swedenborg mentioned publishing the Flying Machine, Polhem was skeptical as to whether it was possible to ever build a machine that could fly. He compared it to building a perpetuum mobile . But Swedenborg replied (somewhat ironically) with a quote by French author Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle :The art of flying is hardly yet born. It will be perfected and some day people will fly up to the moon. Do we pretend to have discovered everything, or to have brought our knowledge to a point where nothing can be added to it? Oh, for mercy’s sake, let us agree that there is still something left for the ages to come!Swedenborg published it anonymously with the title Machine to Fly in the Air . It did not contain an image.Swedenborg knew that the machine would not fly, but suggested it as a start and was |
